Does Foglia Tonda dance alone or with Sangiovese?<\/span><\/h1>\n

\"Does<\/p>\n

Does the\u00a0round leaf<\/strong>\u00a0give better results\u00a0in purity or in assembly<\/strong>\u00a0?<\/span>\u00a0In which type of containers is it better\u00a0to ripen the wine<\/strong>\u00a0for optimal results?<\/span>\u00a0But above all, can this native character and give something more to the wines of certain areas of Tuscany?<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

At the center of these questions is Foglia Tonda, an ancient grape variety widespread especially in the central-southern part of Tuscany, previously abandoned and recently recovered by a small number of wineries.<\/span><\/p>\n

A conference dedicated to Foglia Tonda<\/span><\/h2>\n

To answer these questions, producers and journalists met on February 1 at\u00a0Fattoria del Colle<\/a>\u00a0in\u00a0Donatella Cinelli Colombini<\/strong>\u00a0, in\u00a0Trequanda<\/strong>\u00a0, in the first forum dedicated to the Foglia tonda grape variety.<\/span>\u00a0An appointment that saw the participation of\u00a0nine wineries in most of the Tuscan provinces<\/strong>\u00a0.<\/span>\u00a0Producers who in recent years have dedicated small portions of their vineyard surfaces to the cultivation of this ancient variety.<\/span><\/p>\n

Forgotten throughout the last century<\/span><\/h2>\n

Widespread since time immemorial especially in southern Tuscany and perhaps in Umbria, Foglia Tonda is mentioned by Di Rovasenda (1877) in his\u00a0Essay for universal ampelography<\/em>\u00a0in which he describes this vine present in Brolio.<\/span>\u00a0Even the agronomists Breviglieri and Casini (1964) refer it to Chianti.<\/span>\u00a0More recently the Foglia Tonda has been identified in the historic vineyards within the walls of Siena with the project “Senarum Vinea” (2007-2012).<\/span>\u00a0Since 1970 he<\/strong>\u00a0is registered with the National Register of Vine Varieties<\/strong>\u00a0and in 1978 he was approved by the University of Florence.<\/span>\u00a0It was abandoned about a century ago when its vigor gave the poor peasants of the time so little unripe grapes.<\/span><\/p>\n

Donatella Cinelli Colombini’s passion brought him back to life<\/span><\/h2>\n

Donatella Cinelli Colombini<\/strong>\u00a0can be considered the architect of the recovery of Foglia Tonda in our days\u00a0.<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0It was she who, as\u00a0early as 2000, planted over 400<\/strong>\u00a0grapevines<\/em>\u00a0from the Tuscany Region\u00a0vitiarum<\/em>\u00a0in the Fattoria del Colle vineyards<\/strong>\u00a0.<\/span>\u00a0The experiment immediately gave good results, so much so that in later years it was replicated.<\/span>\u00a0The\u00a0exaggerated production of grapes<\/strong>\u00a0, typical of the vine, was however the greatest problem in the search for vegetative balance.<\/span>\u00a0Crucial to improving the quality of the grapes was also the contribution of Professor\u00a0Cesare Intrieri<\/strong>\u00a0(University of Bologna) who had the production of\u00a0shredded leaves<\/em>\u00a0from the mother plants of the\u00a0vitiarum<\/em>\u00a0of the faculty of agriculture.<\/span>\u00a0And so, with the 2001 vintage, Cenerentola (Orcia Doc) was born, Donatella’s Sangiovese and Foglia tonda based wine.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Cellars that participated in the forum<\/span><\/h2>\n

In addition to Donatella Cinelli Colombini, the following wineries participated in the Forum (opening photo):\u00a0Podere Sequerciani<\/a>\u00a0(Gavorrano, Grosseto),\u00a0Podere Ema<\/a>\u00a0(Grassina, Florence),\u00a0Mocine<\/a>\u00a0(Asciano, Siena),\u00a0Il Castellaccio<\/a>\u00a0(Castagneto Carducci, Livorno) ,\u00a0Mannucci Droandi New Agriculture<\/a>\u00a0(Montevarchi, Arezzo),\u00a0Podere Anima Mundi<\/a>\u00a0(Casciana Terme, Pisa),\u00a0Santa Vittoria<\/a>\u00a0(Foiano della Chiana, Arezzo),\u00a0Poggio al Vento Mascelloni<\/a>\u00a0(Castiglion d’Orcia, Siena).<\/span><\/p>\n

In the tasting the questions about the future of Foglia Tonda emerge<\/span><\/h2>\n

Under the guidance of our colleague\u00a0Gianni Fabrizio<\/strong>\u00a0we tasted the\u00a0nine wines<\/strong>\u00a0produced,\u00a0partly in purity and partly in assembly with Sangiovese and \/ or other grape varieties<\/strong>\u00a0, from the respective companies.<\/span>\u00a0Some aged in amphora and others in traditional containers, barrels or barriques.<\/span>\u00a0The vintages ranged from 2014 to 2017. According to Gianni Fabrizio, Foglia Tonda produces\u00a0wines of considerable polyphenolic richness<\/strong>\u00a0, characterized by a marked acidity and a good vocation for aging.<\/span>\u00a0“About his future”, he explained, “it must be understood if his vocation is to live a life of his own or become a privileged partner of Sangiovese in absolutely autochthonous supertuscans”.<\/span><\/p>\n

Too fertile and vigorous, but resistant to diseases<\/span><\/h2>\n

As for the morphological characteristics,\u00a0the grape has<\/strong>\u00a0(and hence the name) a\u00a0leaf which is practically circular<\/strong>\u00a0and resembling a small pan.<\/span>\u00a0The\u00a0bunches are rather large, compact and pyramidal, sometimes winged<\/strong>\u00a0.<\/span>\u00a0The berries are ovoid with a prominent navel and a very pruinose blue peel.<\/span>\u00a0However, its greatest defect is fertility<\/strong>\u00a0: it produces an excessive amount of grapes.<\/span>\u00a0Its strength, on the other hand, is its resistance to downy mildew, botrytis and, in part, to oidium<\/strong>\u00a0.<\/span>\u00a0It is slightly later than Sangiovese in budding, flowering, veraison and obviously maturation.<\/span>\u00a0As for the wines, these are\u00a0dark garnet red.<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0On the nose they are intense, with\u00a0hints of violets, small fruits and dried plums<\/strong>\u00a0.<\/span>\u00a0In the mouth they are full and full-bodied, with a good adaptation to aging.<\/span><\/p>\n

30 hectares that could soon become 50<\/span><\/h2>\n

Currently in Tuscany the area cultivated with Foglia Tonda is less than 30 hectares, but there are rumors of an important company willing to invest in this variety, planting around 20 hectares.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
